On CNBC’s Squawk on the Street (January 22, 2025), Jim Cramer said: “If he (President Trump) wants to put a stake in inflation, he goes after the pharmacy benefit managers.”

More on PBM Reform:

  • Reform of the big PBM middlemen’s pharmaceutical benefit manipulation is a priority of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) “Four Wins to Make America Healthy Again” – recommendations to the Trump Administration. The recommendations state – “Stop the rip-off: enact PBM middleman reform to lower Americans’ costs and ensure pharmacy choice.”
  • Over the course of one week in December, President Trump discussed the middlemen in two national TV appearances: on Meet the Press and in a press conference.
  • An investigation by the House Oversight and Accountability Committee – chaired by U.S. Rep. James Comer (R-KY) – in July 2024 found that “PBMs inflate prescription drug costs and interfere with patient care for their own financial benefit.”
  • A study by the Federal Trade Commission – which released its most recent report by a unanimous vote last week – revealed that the vertically integrated “Big 3 PBMs” used “enormous markups” on drugs for HIV, cancer, and other diseases to generate more than $7.3 billion between 2017 and 2022.
  • Key Congressional leaders and committee chairmen already have signaled the need and intent to enact PBM reform based on the hard work and solid policy developed in the Senate and House of Representatives, on which consensus has been achieved.
